IMPROVING FOOD SAFETY AT OUR PLANET

Food Secure Infrastructure

Zero Hunger SDG aims to eliminate all the forms of hunger and make sure that all people have sufficient and nutritious food. It requires significant investment in infrastructure and technology of food production and storage. NewCold recognizes its responsibility for providing high quality food storage service that eliminates any risk of spoiled products delivered to final consumers. This can be achieved via the following storage technology.

Warehouse Temperature (– 18 °С to – 26 °С)

NewCold sites operate at the required temperatures from door to door. Not just the warehouse area, where all the pallets are stored has the optimum temperature for the product, but all areas in the facility have the same prime conditions. From the moment a pallet enters the warehouse until it is loaded again to be shipped to a customer, it is in handled at the right temperature. No cold chain breaches occur as products are never stored in chilled or ambient environment. This reduces any possibility of occasional products’ defrosting and, hence, preserves the quality of stored food.

Oxygen reduction system

All the NewCold’s facilities have modern systems in place to prevent damage because of a fire. The highly automated cold stores are fully unmanned and, therefore, can be equipped with Oxygen Reduction Systems. With this preventive technology the oxygen level in the room is reduced to a level where no fire can occur. From a product safety point this principle is far more favorable than firefighting systems like sprinkler or fire compartments.

All of these enable NewCold to minimize the number of damaged products during their storage, loading and unloading processes. Our recent study showed the average stock loss rate of 0,00021% for NewCold’s Burley site, meaning that in almost 99% of cases NewCold’s storage facilities secure products from any damages and, hence, contribute to global food safety.

Most of our repetitive processes are automated and minimize human intervention. This eliminates an important source of product damage, results in a more reliable and predictable operations and ensures a sustainable cost over time.

Promote Equal Opportunities within Workplace and Society

Inequality is one of the factors that constraints economic growth and community development. Thousands of people do not have equal access to education, jobs, food or proper living conditions. NewCold strives to address these issues by providing equal employment opportunities, connecting young graduates with their first work placement and engaging in different philanthropic activities helping those who are in need.

NewCold perceives its employees as the most valuable assets. Therefore, our company strives to offer attractive and challenging work environment that grows our diverse work force. Recruitment, employment and promotion decisions are solely made on the basis of the abilities and qualifications needed for the work to be performed. Currently NewCold has 1030 employees worldwide out of which 17% are women. We believe that gender equality at workplace not only increases overall productivity within the company but also positively impacts local economies by reducing employment gap between men and women.  That is why, NewCold aims to improve its recruitment process to gain a better gender balance among the employees, which will benefit both the company and domestic economies.

NewCold is always seeking for talents and trying to promote their development. In 2019 we launched a Career Pathway’s Portal in Australia – a new Human Resources Information System available to all the employees at NewCold Australia. A Career Pathway’s Portal has currently two active modules: Performance and Online Learning. The Performance module offers such functions as individual goals setting; creation of employee development plans; online performance and probation reviews.

The Online Learning module aims at enhancement of employee competences via mobile learning (learn outside of the office) or learning at your own pace by participating in more than 1000 of courses. This system helps NewCold to not only assess its employee performance but also improve employee capabilities which enable them to create additional value for NewCold. We understand the importance of having strong leaders, therefore, we are working on implementation of a new Succession Planning module. This module will identify and prepare new leaders who will be able to fill key business positions in the future at NewCold Australia.

Promote Equal Access to Healthy Life

Local communities are the main providers of valuable inputs for NewCold’s operations and, at the same time, main consumers of outputs produced by our company. Therefore, NewCold is highly concern about the prosperity and health of ordinary people. Although we cannot directly influence the well-being of our society, we still try to help those who are in need via some philanthropic programs.

NewCold wants to support health of the youngest members in our society. Our employees actively participate in Make-A-Wish foundation which helps to fulfill wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. According to research, realizing a dearest wish gives young patients hope and trust, bringing positive emotions in their daily lives. In 2019 NewCold’s team of 8 enthusiastic employees ran a 10-kilometer marathon to gain funds for Make-A-Wish charity. NewCold is furtherly planning to continue making wishes of seriously ill children come true. In May 2020 a combined team of NewCold-Davanti employees will take part in cycling race to obtain additional funds for the fulfillment of new wishes. Make-A-Wish has already become for NewCold more than just a simple philanthropy but an opportunity for all the employees to spend great time together outside of working hours.

PROFIT FROM WASTE MANAGEMENT

Plastic & Carton Utilization

The achievement of economic growth and sustainable development requires to reduce our ecological footprint by changing the ways of production and consumption. NewCold has a strong commitment to not only eliminate any waste in its operations but also prevent the occurrence of physical waste that harm the environment.

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS: RECYCLE FOR PROFIT

Although our storage and transportation technologies have already contributed to low stock loss rate and, hence, minimum damaged pallets thrown away, we cannot completely eliminate all the waste from our core operations. Therefore, NewCold uses rubbish from its activities as an opportunity to earn additional profit. Our Polish team in Kutno has introduced plastic and carton utilization practice. Currently Kutno sites have two balers which press plastic and carton trash into a pallet size for further transportation. All the compressed garbage is being sold to waste recycling companies, which results in extra earnings for NewCold and less unutilized rubbish for the environment.
