This allows us to create new jobs for highly skilled employees and promote technological advancements within the industry. Responsible energy consumption

According to the research of the United Nations, energy is the main contributor to the global warming, which produces around 60 % of greenhouse gases.  NewCold addresses this problem by constructing energy-efficient warehouses. Our storage technology is based on high stock density. For the same number of storage positions, the footprint and the total surface used are much smaller comparing to traditional warehouses.

All the stacker cranes in the cold store run in the dark. In addition, NewCold’s storage facilities use solely LED lighting for exceptional maintenance purposes. The material handling systems to move the pallets only run when necessary to ensure minimal door openings for pallets entering and leaving the cold storage. Such an approach optimizes power consumption leading to responsible energy usage. Our case study showed that NewCold’s warehouses on average consume 40% less energy per m3 annually comparing to traditional cold storage facilities.

Energy Management in NewCold Australia

NewCold’s competitive advantage is based on energy-efficient facilities. Our sustainable warehouses design and ways of operations take into account environmental impact of energy consumption and aim to minimize natural resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions and related costs. To track our progress towards responsible energy usage, NewCold needs to implement Key Performance Indicators that would assess energy efficiency of our business.

NewCold Australia took proactive actions and developed a sustainability policy which has been put in place in 2019 at Melbourne I and Melbourne II sites. Recently both Australian sites have passed the audit and have obtained ISO 14001:2015 certification, confirming their commitment to environmentally friendly operations. As a part of sustainability policy Australian team has also established an energy management system. During 2019 energy consumption and energy cost data has been collected on a monthly basis. This enabled us to evaluate energy efficiency of NewCold’s warehouses in Australia and determine key factors that affect the amount of power use. Findings from Australian sites should help NewCold to optimize its global energy consumption and, hence, fulfil its commitment to responsible energy usage.

The sustained economic growth is based on higher levels of productivity and technological innovation, which is possible to achieve via fully automated operations. Therefore, automation is a key element framing the sustainability and energy-efficiency of NewCold’s warehouses. Our storage facilities have an automated warehouse management system (WMS) developed by the employees of NewCold’s subsidiary – Davanti Warehousing, with its systems CORAX & MLS.  The software controls all the automated movements of products by the material handling equipment, resulting in less physical labor required for our warehousing services. NewCold uses this as an opportunity to employ more intellectual labor, creating new jobs for IT, engineers and other highly skilled professionals. This, in turn, enables our company to stay innovative and contribute to the global technological progress.

Automation is the main factor which allows NewCold to successfully deal with evolving challenges such as food safety, quality controls, increasing costs of transportation, labor shortages and raising demands for sustainable operations. Currently NewCold is a sponsor of RoboHub, a team of motivated students and professionals of the Eindhoven University in the Netherlands who are working together to discover new solutions for robotic systems. They compete in the worlds most advanced robotics competitions to challenge themselves, push forward innovation and meet likeminded individuals. The team shares its knowledge with companies like NewCold to help them becoming more automated and bring the fourth industrial revolution to those who want it.

NewCold’s most recent innovation is a warehouse management system CORAX, which makes it possible to track and trace inventories by directing all flows in the warehouse with optimal speed, efficiency and reliability.  This complete trackability and traceability provides our clients with a significant reduction in ‘shrinkage’ from lost or outdating of products.  Such a transparency in operations also contributes to long-term relations with customers leading to sustained profitability of our company.
